40 year old communities
Lambeth Council is currently trying to evict Maritza from her “short life” housing cooperative where she’s lived for over 30 years. When she moved in her home was in a terrible state and it was her blood, sweat and tears that saved the home from demolition. Now the council want to hand her home to property developers

We’ve having two stalls this weekend to help publicise the campaign to save the Lambeth Women’s Project, and the campaign to stop the privatisation of the One O’Clock clubs.

    The stalls are:
    Saturday 14th July, 2pm – 4pm

If you can help out with either stall please email Chris

Lambeth Women’s Project is faced with eviction from it’s home in Stockwell Primary School. It has been there, providing a vital service, for over 30 years. We need to do everything we can to stop this. We have:

  • An open Planning meeting, probably the evening of Tuesday 26th or Wednesday 27th, check the campaign website for details
  • A stall at the Acoustic Insurgency gig on Friday 29th June, 8pm, The Grosvenor, Sidney Street, Stockwell. If you can help out please email Chris
  • Please also support:

Three points to plug from the last planning meeting:

  • At 7:30pm on Tuesday 22nd May South West London WDM is hosting a film evening “Films for the 99%”, in the Bread and Roses pub, Clapham. More details here. We’ve got permission to leaflet the event. Chris is organising the SOS presence at the event.
  • Southwark Keep Our NHS Public is holding a relaunch meeting on Saturday 16th June. We need people to leaflet the hospitals to advertise this meeting. If you can help out please email Jeremy and he’ll tell you what times are available
  • Kings College Hospital is planning to privatise it’s dispensing pharmacy and hand it to Sainsburys. We’re planning a big campaign around this, supported by the Unite union in the hospital, more details soon. Until then, please email us for a model motion for you to propose to your local union branch.

There will be a demo outside the Children and Young People Services scrutiny committee on Tuesday 6th September 6pm to 7.30pm over the cuts to youth services (that’s one o’clock clubs, adventure playgrounds and youth clubs among others). This is at Lambeth Town Hall

Unfortunately these cuts are already well under way so this demo will be followed by a meeting on the 13th of September in the Karibu Centre on Gresham Road at 6:30pm. The idea is to bring together people from all the groups affected and try to plan how to take the campaign forward.

Some of these groups have active union members but many don’t. Some are already affected directly but others, such as Children’s Centres, will be targetted more in the next round of cuts. We need to get leaflets for both the demo and the meeting into them all!

We really need people to distribute leaflets round their local youth clubs and community centres to advertise this meeting. If you can help please email Grace
