Staff at Lambeth College have recently been informed of plans for a merger between Lambeth and Lewisham colleges. The background for the proposed merger is massive cuts, with Lambeth College expecting a reduction in funding of around £3 million per year up to 2014/15.

At a joint UNISON and UCU (University and College Union) members argued passionately against a merger based on cuts and for a full consultation with staff, students and the wider communities which could be damaged by badly planned, budget driven changes.

The  unions passed a joint motion stating “that the welfare of staff and the educational delivery to students at both colleges must be paramount in the minds of both college managements when considering this merger [and] that there should be full and open consultation of all stakeholders, including students, staff and the local communities, before any merger takes place.”

UCU and UNISON members, inspired by the action of students in recent weeks that fought the government’s plans for fees cuts and privatisation, resolved to fight back together on a local level.

They resolved:

  • To ensure that a democratic and transparent process takes place.
  • To oppose any course closures, or cuts to services, that may adversely affect the education that both colleges provide to the local community.
  • To protect staff jobs and to ensure that there are no compulsory redundancies.
  • To ensure that staff pay and conditions are in no way degraded as a result of this merger.
  • To continue to campaign for better terms and conditions for all FE staff
